“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it” – Robert Swan

It’s Environment Day and the mood is grim. Plastic pollution has become a major issue for the world. In 1950, the world’s population of 2.5 billion produced 1.5 million tons of plastic. In 2016, a global population of more than 7 billion people produced over 320 million tons of plastic. This is set to double by 2034.

Did you know that 13 million tonnes of plastic garbage leaks into the ocean each year? Due to this plastic, about 100,000 marine animals are killed each year.

And if you are thinking that this only affects marine animals, then think again. 90% of bottled water and 83% of tap water was found to contain plastic particles. Plastics take ages to decompose and burning plastics produces Greenhouse gases. This, in turn, causes Global Warming and Climate Change like irregular rainfall and floods. If this vicious cycle continues, very soon our polar ice caps, which are already melting at the rate of 9% per year, will cause catastrophic changes to our dear Earth, starting with an acute freshwater shortage.

A Small Effort for Big Change

The reason we are getting worked up about climate change is that it is high time. WisdmLabs is not just about Open Source technology. We feel it is also about using technology to bring positive change in the world.

It is our collective responsibility to reduce plastics and thus we fully support Environment Day 2018’s theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. At the current rate of consumption, plastic production will double within 10-15 years. Plastic continues to be one of the biggest environmental challenges we are facing in an already dangerous time. If we don’t discover ways to change our usage of plastic, we are moving towards the worst outcome.

Beat Plastic Pollution, the theme for World Environment Day 2018, is a call to action for all of us to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time. The theme invites us all to consider how we can make changes in our everyday lives to reduce the heavy burden of plastic pollution on our natural places, our wildlife – and our own health.

Keeping this in mind, this Environment Day, WisdmLabs has started its first Environment Festival, from June 4th to 13th. We have a host of activities lined up. As a part of our green initiative, both our offices are going Plastic Free. And here’s how you can be a part of the festival:
