ten ecommerce web design company profiles compared on platform, conversion evidence and design plus development capability
Quick answer:

The best ecommerce web design company depends on your platform, business model, and whether you need design alone or design and development together.

For WordPress and WooCommerce: WisdmLabs and Saucal suit technically complex stores that need design and development capabilities.
For Shopify Plus, B2B, and multi-platform ecommerce: Absolute Web, Elogic Commerce, Swanky, Velstar, and We Make Websites fit different combinations of B2B, replatforming, and premium ecommerce needs.
For DTC and brand-led ecommerce: Fuel Made, Avex, and Digital Silk are stronger fits for conversion-focused, brand-heavy redesigns and DTC experiences.

For established and scaling ecommerce businesses, choosing a web design company involves more than finding an agency with an impressive portfolio. If your store handles a large product catalogue, B2B pricing, subscriptions, or multiple integrations, the right partner needs to understand both the buying experience and the technical requirements behind it.

What matters is whether the agency can build what it designs, whether its work improves the buying experience after launch, and whether it has the platform and ecommerce expertise your business needs.

An ecommerce web design company designs and builds the parts of an online store that shape how customers find, evaluate, and buy products, from navigation and search to category and product pages, cart and checkout. For B2B ecommerce, the scope can also include account-specific pricing, bulk ordering, approval workflows, and reordering.

This list compares ten ecommerce web design companies using criteria that go beyond portfolio aesthetics. We considered their ecommerce capabilities, platform expertise, design-to-development capabilities, publicly available evidence of results, reviews, and the types of businesses and projects they serve. We also examined what each company publishes about its work rather than relying on portfolio screenshots alone.

Minimums come from each firm’s Clutch profile or directory listing as of October 2026. Treat them as entry points, not budgets. Here’s how each firm was judged.

How we judged each ecommerce website design agency

Each firm was rated against criteria, using only evidence a buyer could check themselves. We rated each criterion as strong, partial or not evidenced, and we treated third-party proof (a platform’s own case study, a large volume of verified reviews) as stronger than an agency’s own figures.

Ecommerce UX expertise

Ecommerce UX expertise means designing the pages where money changes hands, not only the homepage. We looked for shipped category pages, product pages, cart and checkout flows, and account or reorder journeys. A firm whose portfolio is mostly hero banners and brand pages got a partial rating, however good those banners were.

Conversion thinking

Conversion thinking shows up as post-launch numbers with a baseline and a timeframe. The Baymard Institute’s 2025 checkout benchmark found the average large ecommerce site can gain “as much as a 35% increase in conversion rate” through checkout design changes, and that 64% of desktop sites still have “mediocre” or worse checkout UX.

A case study without a post-launch metric tells you what the store looks like, not whether it worked. Figures without a baseline or measured within two weeks of launch were labelled as such.

Platform expertise

Platform expertise is depth on the system your store runs on, plus honesty about the systems a firm doesn’t touch. We checked partner tiers (Shopify Platinum, Adobe Solution Partner and similar) and platform spread. Four of the ten build only on Shopify. That’s a strength if you’re committed to Shopify and a hard limit if you’re not.

Design-to-development capability

Design-to-development capability means the team that designs the store also builds it, or has a written plan for who does. We noted whether the build is in-house, partly outsourced, or whether the firm is really a development shop that offers design. The handover between designer and developer is where most conversion intent gets diluted.

Complexity of projects

Project complexity is evidence of work beyond a standard catalogue: B2B pricing, wholesale portals, subscriptions, ERP or CRM integration, multi-store setups. A firm that has only shipped single-brand DTC stores may be excellent and still the wrong choice for a store with 3,000 SKUs and customer-specific price lists.

Evidence of shipped work

Evidence of shipped work is proof that someone other than the agency stands behind the result. We weighed Clutch review volume, platform case studies and client reviews over self-published claims. We also noted ownership changes, because an acquisition can change who actually works on your account.

The 10 ecommerce web design companies worth briefing, and where each fits

After our own profile, the other nine firms fall into five groups: multi-platform B2B builders, Shopify Plus specialists with CRO built in, a Shopify Plus design-and-build studio, a design-led generalist and a WooCommerce specialist. Each profile follows the same format so you can compare like with like.

1. WisdmLabs

WisdmLabs custom web design services landing page above the fold

Best for: Scaling stores and course businesses on WordPress, WooCommerce or LearnDash, especially those with subscriptions, customer-specific pricing or custom product logic.

What we do well: Design and development by one team, so the build follows the design closely. We also build WooCommerce extensions used for B2B selling, such as customer-specific pricing and product enquiry, and we’ve run subscription migrations where billing continuity mattered.

Ecommerce and platform expertise: WordPress, WooCommerce and LearnDash are our core platforms, and Shopify is a listed service. We don’t build on Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce or Salesforce Commerce Cloud.

Evidence: Our Bible Verses Everywhere redesign reports a 171% conversion rate increase and 60% faster page loads, without a published baseline. The OPRL subscription migration moved hundreds of subscriptions with 99.8% data accuracy. We hold 4.6 from 17 reviews on Clutch.

Ideal project fit: .Growing ecommerce and eLearning businesses, broadly in the 500K–10M+ range, that need custom design and development, subscriptions, B2B pricing, integrations, or ongoing optimisation. WisdmLabs is particularly well suited to businesses that want one engineering-led team to manage the design, build, and post-launch suppo

2. Absolute Web

Absolute Web ecommerce agency homepage above the fold

Best for: Mid-size and larger stores, including B2B and B2B2C, that need one team across design, build and ongoing optimisation.

What they do well: Full-service delivery, from design and development to QA, hosting, support and CRO. Its portfolio has a dedicated B2B and industrial category, with gated pricing and net-terms builds.

Ecommerce and platform expertise: Adobe Commerce is its main platform, alongside Shopify Plus (including Hydrogen), BigCommerce and WooCommerce. It’s listed as a Shopify Platinum Partner since 2015.

Evidence: The strongest third-party result in this list. Shopify’s own Capezio case study names Absolute Web as partner and reports a 144% conversion rate increase after moving from Adobe Commerce to Shopify. It holds 4.9 from 83 reviews on Clutch.

Ideal project fit: A B2B or hybrid store replatforming between major platforms, with a budget starting around $30K (its Shopify directory starting price for builds).

3. Elogic Commerce

Elogic Commerce ecommerce agency homepage above the fold

Best for: Manufacturers and distributors that need a B2B portal tied into SAP, NetSuite or a similar ERP.

4. Swanky

Swanky ecommerce agency homepage above the fold

Best for: Brands moving to Shopify Plus from another platform, including B2B, that want testing to continue after launch.

What they do well: Pairing builds with a “Grow” practice covering CRO, SEO and email. Its Saddleback B2B build won B2B Website of the Year at the UK Digital Growth Awards 2021.

Evidence: The PishPoshBaby replatform reports conversion +68% and AOV +41%, measured less than two weeks after launch.

Ideal project fit: A mid-size brand replatforming to Shopify Plus that wants one team through launch and the first year of optimisation.

5. Fuel Made

Fuel Made ecommerce agency homepage above the fold

Best for: DTC brands already on Shopify Plus that see design as the start of a testing programme, not a one-off project.

What they do well: Conversion work. Clutch splits its work roughly 35% CRO, 30% development, 25% email and 10% design.

Ecommerce and platform expertise: Shopify-exclusive since 2010 and a Shopify Plus Partner since 2011. Klaviyo Master Elite Partner.

Evidence: In a Clutch review, Live Bearded says conversion moved from about 3% to between 5.5% and 6% after a rebuild and CRO retainer. That’s a client’s figure, not the agency’s. Fuel Made holds 5.0 from 28 reviews on Clutch.

Ideal project fit: A $3M+ DTC brand ready to fund a rebuild and a monthly testing retainer.

6. Avex

Avex ecommerce agency homepage above the fold

Best for: Design-forward consumer brands, including those considering a headless Shopify build.

What they do well: Strong visual design combined with a growth retainer that covers CRO, A/B testing and Klaviyo retention.

7. Velstar

Velstar ecommerce agency homepage above the fold

Best for: UK-led brands on Shopify Plus that also sell wholesale.

What they do well: Breadth. In 2024 it acquired WeTeachCRO, a CRO agency, and 9xb, a B2B ecommerce agency with its own platform. It has built a custom B2B portal for Castore.

Ecommerce and platform expertise: Shopify and Shopify Plus, with a Shopify Platinum listing, plus 9xb’s platform for B2B.

Evidence: Named clients include French Connection, AVON and Castore. We couldn’t find published conversion results, and there’s no Clutch profile. Its Shopify directory rating is 5.0 from 11 reviews.

Ideal project fit: A brand running DTC and wholesale side by side that wants both handled by one agency. Sortlist lists website creation from €50,000.

8. We Make Websites

We Make Websites ecommerce agency homepage above the fold

Best for: Premium consumer brands where the storefront carries the brand.

What they do well: High-end Shopify design and headless builds (Hydrogen with Sanity) for brands such as Vollebak, Good American and Totême.

Ecommerce and platform expertise: Shopify Partner since 2011, Shopify Plus Partner, Sanity agency partner.

Evidence: The Vollebak case study reports orders +185% and bounce rate −47%, without a timeframe or baseline.

Ideal project fit: A premium DTC brand with a headless ambition and a budget to match.

Group: Design-led generalist

9. Digital Silk

Digital Silk ecommerce agency homepage above the fold

Best for: Brands that need a visual repositioning as much as a better store, on more than one possible platform.

What they do well: Brand-led design. Clutch splits its work about 50% web design and 20% ecommerce development.

Ecommerce and platform expertise: Shopify and Shopify Plus, WooCommerce and Magento. We found no published Shopify or Adobe partner status, which matters if you want a platform-backed guarantee on implementation quality.

Evidence: Its ZipTie case study reports conversion up 353% to 3.61% in the first 30 days, on a B2B Shopify Plus store. It holds 4.9 from 51 reviews on Clutch.

Ideal project fit: A rebrand plus redesign where you’ll agree milestones, QA and launch criteria in writing.

10. Saucal

Saucal ecommerce agency homepage above the fold

What they do well: WooCommerce engineering. It built and stabilised the Amazon Pay plugin for WooCommerce merchants, and it offers migrations, performance work and support.

Ecommerce and platform expertise: WooCommerce and WordPress only. Listed as a WordPress VIP Silver Agency Partner, and its homepage shows a Woo Pro Partner badge.

Evidence: The Rocky case study reports site speed doubled and conversion up 5x after fixing a script conflict, without a baseline. Its homepage shows a 5-star Clutch rating from 20 reviews.

Ideal project fit: A WooCommerce store whose problems are technical first, paired with a separate design partner if visual work is also needed.

If you're evaluating WooCommerce or need a more flexible, multi-platform approach, compare WisdmLabs or Saucal before continuing. The distinction matters because the right design partner also needs to support how your store operates behind the scenes.

Ask these 7 questions before you brief an ecommerce web design company

These seven questions show whether a firm understands ecommerce or mainly understands design. Ask them in writing, and compare the answers side by side.

1. “Show me a store on my platform you launched in the last two years. What changed in conversion after 90 days?” You want a number, a timeframe and a baseline.

2. “Who on your team builds the design, and is any of it subcontracted?” Names and roles, not “our development team.”

3. “How would you handle [our B2B pricing, subscriptions or bundles]?” Pick your hardest feature. Vague answers here become change requests later.

4. “Walk me through one UX decision you’d question on our current product page.” This shows whether they’ve looked at your store or only your brief.

5. “What do you measure before launch so the result can be compared?” If they don’t set a baseline, you can’t judge their work. The conversion audit above gives you that starting point before any firm does.

6. “What happens in the 30 to 90 days after launch?” Bug fixes, measurement and iteration should be in scope, not a separate sale.

7. “Who will actually work on our account, and has your ownership changed recently?” Several firms on this list have been acquired or taken investment in the last three years.

Want to Design and Develop your Site?

If your store runs on WooCommerce and there's no in-house team to build custom pricing, subscriptions or integrations, line up the build before design sign-off, not after.

Is this ecommerce design firm ready to brief? A 6-question check

Run this once for each firm you’re considering. Answer yes or no.

1. Have they launched a store on your platform in the last two years?

2. Does at least one of their case studies report a post-launch metric with a timeframe?

3. Will the team that designs your store also build it, or is the build handover written into the scope? If you already have developers and need design only, look for a written handover plan rather than in-house development.

4. Have they handled your type of complexity: B2B pricing, subscriptions, a large catalogue or integrations?

5. Could they explain one UX decision from a past project and what it was meant to change?

6. Is a post-launch period for fixes, measurement and iteration included?

5 to 6 yes: Brief them. Send the seven questions above as part of the brief.

3 to 4 yes: Keep them on the list, and send the “no” items as written questions before you share anything sensitive.

0 to 2 yes: Keep looking, or consider a partner that designs and builds in one team, so the gaps in the check don’t become gaps in your store.

Conclusion: Turn the Shortlist Into a Brief

The right ecommerce web design company is the one whose work you can trace to a business result, not the one whose screenshots you like most.

As a store grows, that gets harder to judge. More SKUs, more channels and more price rules mean more ways a good-looking design can fail at the cart.

Use the 6-question check above on every firm you shortlist. Which ones showed you a number? Which explained a decision? Which will build what they draw?

If you’re committed to one platform and your complexity is in merchandising, a specialist on that platform is the strongest bet. If you have B2B pricing, integrations or an open platform question, a multi-platform design-and-build partner fits better. If you already have strong developers, a design-only studio can work, as long as the handover is written down.

FAQ

How much does an ecommerce web design company charge?

Established ecommerce design firms usually start at $10,000 or more. In this shortlist, most published Clutch minimums run from $10K+ to $50K+, and Absolute Web’s Shopify listing starts builds at $30,000. B2B integrations, large migrations and headless builds push budgets well above those minimums.

Should I hire a Shopify-only ecommerce agency?

Yes, if you’ve already decided Shopify is right for your store, because a specialist’s depth on one platform is an advantage. If you’re still choosing between Shopify, WooCommerce and Adobe Commerce, start with a multi-platform firm. A Shopify-only agency can only recommend Shopify.

What’s the difference between ecommerce web design and ecommerce development?

Ecommerce web design decides how the store looks and how shoppers move through it, from navigation to checkout. Ecommerce development builds that design on a platform and connects it to payments, inventory and other systems. Many conversion problems come from the gap between the two, which is why it matters who does each.

Can an ecommerce redesign lower conversion?

Yes. A redesign can lower conversion if it changes familiar paths or adds friction at checkout. The Baymard Institute found 64% of desktop ecommerce sites have mediocre or worse checkout UX, so a new design can easily repeat old mistakes. Set a baseline before launch and compare at 30 and 90 days.

How long does an ecommerce website redesign take?

A mid-size ecommerce redesign typically takes three to six months, depending on templates, integrations and migration. Get the timeline in writing, with milestones and launch criteria. Clutch reviews of agencies in this space include projects that ran several times longer than quoted.
