Our Work Speed Optimization

How a German eLearning Platform Lifted Mobile PageSpeed 32.5% Without Rebuilding a Thing

The slowest part of the platform was the part learners paid for.

Ofenakademie delivers its courses through LearnDash, which means most real users meet the site after logging in: opening lessons, browsing courses, moving through the learning flow. That experience had turned slow, and PageSpeed scores said so, loudest on mobile. Five configuration-level steps turned it around.

The Client

Most of this platform's life happens behind the login.

Ofenakademie, an online education platform from Germany.

Ofenakademie built Germany’s first online academy for wood stove owners, training them to heat efficiently and cleanly through the Ofenführerschein. It offers video lessons on fuel, lighting, refueling, and maintenance, closing with a test and a personalized environmental certificate. The platform serves individual learners and partners with municipalities that sponsor the training for entire districts.

In Their Words

The brief was short. The scores told the rest.

Faster for visitors. Smoother for every logged-in learner.

We’re very satisfied. That says it all basically but explicitly we wanted to thank WisdmLabs for their speed, their professionalism & their good work. The requests we had on every project are fulfilled. They really work until the customer is satisfied.

The Challenge

What good is a fast homepage if lessons load slowly?

Public pages set the first impression. Logged-in learners felt every slow second.

The website felt slow and the PageSpeed scores reflected it, especially on mobile. Large banner assets carried heavy LCP impact, and even after login, LearnDash users experienced slow loading that hurt the core learning experience.

What the scores demanded

Lighter, faster pages.

  • Mobile speed gains
  • Optimized banners
  • Better LCP behavior

What learners needed

Speed past the login.

  • Faster lesson loads
  • Smoother course flow
  • Personalization intact

The real question

Caching is the obvious answer to a slow site, and the dangerous one for an LMS. Cache logged-in pages carelessly and learners see each other’s data or lose their own progress view. The question was how to make LearnDash fast without breaking what makes it personal.

The Non-negotiable

All in all, it came down to these 5 non-negotiables.

01

Overall speed had to improve measurably, on real PageSpeed scores rather than feel alone.

02

Mobile had to lead the gains, because that’s where the scores and the slowdowns were worst.

03

Homepage banner and mobile images had to shed their LCP weight without losing quality.

04

Logged-in LearnDash users needed faster loading with user-specific functionality intact.

05

Everything had to happen through configuration and optimization, never a rebuild.

How His Store Got Built

Five steps, each one aimed at a measured slowdown.

Cache it, lighten it, clean it, and keep the login fast.

01 · Caching & Files

Less repeated work, fewer heavy assets.

Page caching cut repeated server work so key pages load faster and feel more responsive across sessions. File optimization followed: CSS/JS minification and related improvements reduced page weight, so pages ship fewer heavy assets and render more efficiently on every device.

  • Page caching Repeat loads served fast instead of rebuilt.
  • CSS/JS minification Page weight trimmed at the file level.
  • Efficient rendering Fewer heavy assets between click and content.

02 · Database & Images

Cleaner underneath, lighter above the fold.

Database optimization removed the overhead that builds up over time, keeping the site cleaner and more consistent. Then the LCP work: WebP conversion, resizing unoptimized assets, and preload for LCP-heavy elements, so above-the-fold content loads faster, especially on mobile.

  • Database cleanup Accumulated overhead cleared for consistency.
  • WebP + resizing Banner and mobile images finally lightweight.
  • Preload for LCP Above-the-fold content arrives first.

03 · Logged-In Speed

The learning experience, cached without breaking.

WP Rocket’s User Cache feature went in with deliberate testing and fixes to ensure compatibility with logged-in LearnDash experiences. Learners now get faster loads without losing user-specific functionality, closing the gap between public-page speed and the real learning flow.

  • User Cache enabled Logged-in pages served at cache speed.
  • Tested until safe Compatibility fixes before anything shipped.
  • Personalization kept Faster loads, same individual experience.
