How UK's Largest Grass Seed Distributor Got Its WooCommerce Store Running Like New
A store frozen in time was finally due its upgrades.
Twenty-eight years online, and every sale rides on the site.
The Grass Seed Store Ltd., the UK’s largest grass seed distributor.
Operating exclusively online for over 28 years, the company supplies premium-quality grass seeds and lawn care products to retail and D.I.Y. gardening customers across the country. That longevity built a reputation for quality, consistency, and customer trust that made them a leading name in the British gardening industry.
Where the fixing started, in the builder's own words.
Discount logic first. Everything else followed.
When the store is the business, every glitch has a price tag.
Five separate problems were dragging on daily sales. The client wanted one comprehensive fix.
Discounts couldn’t adjust to customer-specific requirements, legacy code slowed pages, seed bundles had no streamlined home in WooCommerce, backend tasks ate staff time, and outdated plugins threatened compatibility with every update.
- Inconsistent pricing
- Slower page loads
- Checkout glitches
- Time-consuming admin
- Unmanageable bundles
- Outdated plugins
The real question
Each issue had a patch, and patches were how the store got here. What it needed instead was a comprehensive optimization strategy, one pass that fixed the user experience and the backend efficiency together, and left the stack ready to scale.
All in all, it came down to these 5 non-negotiables.
Discounts had to adjust dynamically to customer-specific requirements, ending inconsistent pricing experiences.
Legacy code and outdated scripts had to go, along with the slow page loads and glitches they caused.
Grass seed bundles needed a streamlined way to be managed and sold within WooCommerce.
Routine backend tasks had to get faster, making order and product management genuinely efficient.
Outdated plugins had to be upgraded and optimized for the latest WooCommerce and WordPress versions.
Step by step, each pass resolved one bottleneck for good.
Logic fixed, code tightened, stack brought up to date.
01 · Logic & Admin
Discounts that agree with themselves.
Front-end and back-end discount behavior was aligned through complete testing and debugging, with rules validated to fire correctly at checkout, order creation, and in admin workflows. 02 · Code & Bundles
The bundle plugin, finally pulling its weight.
The third-party Seed Bundle Plugin got its logic and documentation improved, with packet size variation bugs debugged and fixed. Four single-file enhancements refined the experience: invoice and delivery label text, standardized uppercase addresses, shipping logic that auto-hides delivery charges when free, and category templates cleared of the category-price display. WooCommerce, dependent plugins, and the theme all moved to the latest stable versions.
