The primary difference is that Course Author does not have access to the back-end settings of your LMS, while the Instructor does. The Course Author can create courses, lessons, topics and quizzes right from options provided or his/her BuddyPress profile. The Instructor on the other hand, can create courses, lessons and topics from the LMS back-end, using LearnDash settings.
